Everything about this post makes me happy. I have a beautiful 1963 Olivetti Lettera 22 and by far, it's my favourite place to write. I also love having my dictionary and thesaurus (real books!) next to me when I do write. It's a mindfulness activity in itself! Imagine, once it was always like this (I'm of the era where we learned to type on an actual typewriter (just)!). It often makes me ponder about yes, all the good things the Internet age has brought, but also the loss of those more magical moments. So glad there are a community of us keeping "the cadence of creativity" alive! 🧡🙏🏻🍂
This is amazingly exciting! I sooo want a typewriter ~ it is added to my wish list … in BOLD letters! Love hearing about other authors that feel the satisfaction of the clicking keys!
“Everything you type on a typewriter sounds grand, the words forming mini-explosions. A thank-you note resonates with the same heft as a literary masterpiece.” I was in heaven with Hank’s quote but then to see his letter! OMG! 😍
My great grandmother exclusively used a typewriter for everything. From letters, to recipes, to birthday cards; it all went through the typewriter. She was also my first pen pal and I anticipated her typed out correspondence where only her name was signed. She even typed on the envelopes!!
I’ve been a fan of the typewriter ever since and now have a few myself, which I often use to send letters. In fact, I need to send a card out this week and I think the typewriter is the perfect touch to what I’m sending.
This is so cool! Love Tom Hanks. He seems like a genuine soul. Thinking about doing a FB marketplace exchange... I bought a used sewing machine a while back along with a beginner kit but I have not used it at all. Turns out sewing is a lot more than sitting down to use the machine, and I don't have the desire to go through all the steps to make a singular garment. I think the market for sewing machines would be similar to those who use typewriters? Any recs for a typewriter? Or typewriters to absolutely stay away from?
How exciting, Caitlin! I most definitely endorse getting a typewriter. HA! You are asking GREAT questions. And while I have lots and lots of thoughts, my friend Sarah has a YouTube channel where she answers those questions in a fun and entertaining way. This video, Typewriter 101, is perfect for you right now. :)
Woz! I too have received a letter from Tom Hanks. He told he doesn't use the typewriter for his novels. He mostly uses his machines for letter writing. I loved Sandra Cisneros' story -- it's so romantic, and a great idea for anyone traveling. Ask to borrow a local typewriter. What a great way to meet locals. Also re Cisneros, I'm thinking she meant keys would strike the platen too fiercely. The typewriter platen could also be too hard, hence the 'fierce' strikes.
I so enjoyed reading this and learning more about all of the different writers who actually type their books on typewriters! Reading this also makes me feel so excited for purchasing my own typewriter to maybe write my own stories on one day. 😊 Thank you for sharing this post Woz and the Tom Hanks letter is amazing, what a treasure! ♡
The Hanks' letter, what a treasure!
😃
Everything on the typewriter does sound grand! Thank you for sharing this perspective on writing. I may need to give it a try.
There are lots of options out there. Just like a car, test drive until you find the right one for you. 😃

I’m so happy this resonated so much with you. Sounds like your Olivetti is quite loved and in good company with your books beside her. :)

I sincerely hope your typewriter wishes come true! The right one (varies by person, like a wand!) can be magical. :)
I will definitely share with you when one appears!

Cisneros’ story IS so romantic, isn’t it? Dreamy.
